Dhananjaya steals the limelight

One new Sri Lanka record was establishe­d and one record was equalled on the opening day of the athletics first selection trial worked off at the Sugathadas­a Stadium in Colombo yesterday.

The new record was set by National cap Greshan Dhananjaya of Army SC in the Men’s triple jump final event.

Dhananjaya cleared a distance of 16.71 metres and bettered the previous record of 16.39 metres held by I. D. S. S. Jayasinghe in 2017 at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex in Diyagama.

Meanwhile, Suranjaya de Silva of Lanka Lions SC equalled his own Men’s 100m record with a fine effort of 10.27 seconds in the second semi-final.

In addition, National champion Himasha Eshan of Army SC also set up a new record in the Men’s 100m first semi-final.

He clocked an impressive 10.12 to erase the previous best of 10.26 but his effort was not recognised due to the wind speed of +2.6.

The meet is held in preparatio­n for the 23rd Asian Athletics Championsh­ips in Doha, Qatar and for the South Asian Games in Kathmandu, Nepal.
