Constitutional Council functions without any biasness
We all in Parliament voted for the 19th amendment proving for the establishment of the Constitutional Council. However, some are now opposing it and say it is politicized. The main reason for their opposition is the difficulty they are having to appoint the judges they want. They could not proceed with their anti democratic activities
Plantation Industries Minister Navin Dissanayake said that there were those opposing the 19th Amendment to the Constitution today because they could not get their favourites appointed as judges.
Mr. Dissanayake who is also the national organizer of the UNP, said a bulk of MPS cutting across the party lines, had voted for its enactment at that time.
“We all in Parliament voted for the 19th amendment proving for the establishment of the Constitutional Council. However, some are now opposing it and say it is politicized. The main reason for their opposition is the difficulty they are having to appoint the judges they want. They could not proceed with their anti democratic activities due to the Supreme Court taking firm positions. If it is allowed to appoint the judges loyal to them what would be the fate of the legal system of the country.
These views were expressed by him while participating at the ‘Vevili Saviya’ Sports Festival 2019, organized by Tea Small Holders’ Development Authority at Kalutara District Sport Ground in Bandaragama.
“My father late Minister Gamini Dissanayaka worked hard to give the latest cultivation technology of Israel in 1980s for our Mahaweli farmers. We have a fertile earth and without hesitation we should obtain the knowledge from these countries.
We have water, labour but still we are unable to become self-sufficient in food production. After 70 years of our independence we are still struggling to attain our targets. Our experts in Agriculture field should find the answers for these problems.”
