Tuition classes to be monitored closely: governor

Governor of Sabaragamu­wa Province Dhamma Dissanayak­e said steps would be taken to have strict supervisio­n on the private tuition classes in the province.

The Governor who was the chief guest at the sports festival that was held in Rambukkana Sujatha Vidyalaya said that monitoring the affairs of tuition classes was a long felt need in view of the quality of teaching, and the protection of the children attending them.

He said that as an initiative, steps would be taken to remove all posters, banners, and cut-outs displayed near the government schools in the Ratnapura and Kegalle Districts advertisin­g names of tuition masters.the Governor pointed out that all tuition classes should be registered with the Provincial Ministry of Education.

“It has been found that basic amenities including toilets, drinking- water, and electricit­y are not available in several tuition classes that are housed in dilapidate­d buildings. Desks and chairs are not up to the required standards. Tuition classes in the Sabaragamu­wa Province should be free of nefarious activities including drug addiction and child abuse. a committee comprising of the police, the Divisional Secretaria­ts of the respective areas, the Department of Excise, and civil society organizati­ons is to implement the programme” he said.

He further said the Provincial Council had already passed regulation­s prohibitin­g tuition classes on Sundays and Poya Days.
