FIVE IN STF UNIFORMS RANSACK BUSINESSMA­N IN MEEGODA

Five persons, clad in attire similar to the uniforms of the Special Task Force and armed with firearms and sharp weapons, had robbed cash and jewellery from a businessma­n at the Meegoda Economic Centre, the Police said. The gang members had rounded up the businessma­n and his nephew when they were entering the garden of their house after coming from the economic centre after the day’s business. The men in STF uniform has pretended that they had come to check his house as they have received informatio­n about fire arms in his possession. Two of them were armed with fire arms and other three with sharp weapons.

The suspects had led the businessma­n into his house and tied to a chair in the bathroom and plastered his mouth before robbing gold chain he was wearing worth Rs.400,000, and about Rs. 100,000 in cash from his shirt pocket and keys of the safe. They have also tied and forced into a room his nephew and two servants of the house and searched the entire house for any other valuables, according to the Police.

While fleeing they have grabbed, another businessma­n from Homagama who had come to hand over an invitation, tied and forced in to a room. The gang has also snatched off the CCTV camera before leaving in the luxury car, police said. The second businessma­n who managed to rescue others had alerted the emergency police.

The OIC of Meegoda Police Chief Inspector Sunilaka Rupasinghe said two police teams have been deployed to arrest the suspects through the footage’s of the CCTV cameras in the area. Under the supervisio­n of the OIC Rupasingha Crime Investigat­ion Unit OIC SI Lalith and IP Senevirath­na are carrying out further investigat­ions.
