13 Uni. students arrested for disruption of Police duties

Matara Police headquarte­rs said that 13 students had been taken in for questionin­g yesterday for disturbing the Police and violating the court order. These students had not allowed the Police to bring a stock of paddy to the government warehouse that was located within the premises of Ruhuna University.

However, two lorry loads of paddy had been taken to the warehouse by the Police ignoring the demonstrat­ions by the students. At that time, an argument ensued between the students and Police. A court order had already been obtained by the police for transporti­ng the paddy to the warehouse.

On February 27, 2019 the students had closed down the main gate and not allowed the police to transport paddy but the police had dispersed without making any attempt.

These 13 students were scheduled to be produced before, the Matara Magistrate’s Court today due to the involvemen­t in an unauthoriz­ed assembly, disrupting the duties of the police officers and the violation of the court order

in Matara initially but the students had demanded that it should be given back to the university due to lack of accommodat­ion.

A team of police officers are launching investigat­ions under the directions of Matara Division OIC SP Gayanga Hasantha Marapana.
