It is now revealed by statistics relating to the special ambulance service introduced recently, that emergency calls received by the “Suwaseriya” ambulance service have exceeded 886,171 and the total number of patients taken to hospitals by this ambulance service was166,533.

The most number of patients taken to the hospitals by this ambulance service during last year were reported as from the Western Province and a majority of them were victims of road accidents and those who suffered heart ailments.

This ambulance service mooted by the Non Cabinet Minister of Economic Reforms and Public Distribution Harsha De Silva is now in operation in several provinces including Northern, Southern, Western, Uva and Central Provinces, with 297 ambulances and a service staff numbering 1,998.

The Chief Executive Director Sohan De Silva said that people are now appreciating this service and sending congratulatory messages.

The contrasting difference in messages received for this service and the number of patients who were admitted to hospitals is due to the fact that several calls are received in the event of an accident from different people.

It is regretting to note that some miscreants are in the habit of giving nuisance calls to the telephone operators manning the emergency telephone lines of the Suwaseriya Ambulance service, which only causes a delay in taking a critical person to a hospital for urgent treatment. Sohan De Silva said that people should realize this magnanimous gesture on the part of Minister Harsha De Silva in establishing this service and avoid engaging in giving nuisance calls to the authorities who have no time to waste by replying to these time wasting calls.

It is intended to extend this service to the Eastern Province also in the very near future. Despite all these issues the service offered by the Suwaseriya is gaining popularity among the ordinary people who readily shower their blessings on it for an uninterrupted continuation.
