Madush’s plea to SC a dangerous precedent: UNP MP
Makandure Madush’s request to the Supreme Courts to issue a restraining order preventing his arrest could be a dangerous precedent as all serious criminals might follow the same move as a tactic to escape the law, UNP MP Thushara Indunil said yesterday.
Mr. Indunil told a media conference yesterday that it would not be possible to deal with any criminal if calling for restraining orders becomes a trend.
The UNP MP found fault with Former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa for the action taken by Madhush stating it was he who created it by seeking a similar restraining order to prevent his arrest.
Also he faulted the joint opposition for its stance on penalizing the corrupt. “First they blame us saying we have failed to take action against the corrupt and then they accuse of subjecting their people to political victimization,” he said. Also he said even President Maithripala Sirisena prevented the arrest of wrong doers at times.
Responding to a question raised by the journalists with regard to the questioning of former Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda, the MP said the former Naval officer was not blamed for his action in the war but over the alleged abduction of some youth.” No one is undermining former Navy Commander’s role in the war,” the MP stressed.
“How could we deal with the wrong doers in such a situation?” he said.
Predicting the future he said a UNPER will contest the Presidential election.
