Complete national teacher transfers before next year - Minister

Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasa­m yesterday advised its officials to complete the national school teacher transfers before commenceme­nt of the first term of next year.

He said about 6,000 national school teacher transfer applicatio­ns for the year 2020 had been received by the Department. About 2,000 applicatio­ns had been received requesting for transfers, from teachers of national schools who had served for over 10 years.

Necessary steps would be taken to implement transfers of teachers in national schools represente­d by Teachers’ Trade Unions, after appointing of a Teacher Transfer Committee. The Education Minister had decided to transfer teachers who had served in national schools for over 10 years in 2017. Kariyawasa­m, as the policy on transfers of teachers in National Schools had been abolished for many years. The aim of implementi­ng the transfers is to enhance the efficiency of utilising the valuable human resources in the education system through optimum teacher allocation.

The transfers were made according to the National Teacher Transfer Policy and with the transfers, every teacher would get an opportunit­y to teach in national schools. 12,000 teachers had been transferre­d in 2017 and 5,000 transfers had been made in the last year.
