Foreign Affairs Minister Thilak Marapana blocked the legal actions from being taken against the MPS who were responsible for the commotion that erupted during the 50-days Government in last October, National Movement for a Just Society Convener Professor Sarath Wijesuriya said.

Prof. Wijesuriya expressed these views during the keynote address of the event held at the BMICH on Wednesday to express gratitude to the Maha Sanga of the Tri-sects for awarding Speaker Karu Jayasuriya with an honorary title.

The Mahanayakes of Sri Amarapura Nikaya and the Sri Ramayana Nikaya, and also the Chief Prelates of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters of the Siam Sect graced the occasion. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge and several other distinguished guests were present at the event. Prof. Wijesuriya said the entire world saw the rowdy behaviour of some of the MPS who sprayed chili powder, damaged properties and injured fellow MPS when commotion erupted in parliament.

“People want these MPS to be brought to book. However, it seems that no action has been taken yet despite the clear visuals being circulated of their unruly behaviour,” he said. Meanwhile, the government who came to power in 2015 had not been able to deliver what they pledged to the people.

“It is very pathetic to see the anarchic state of affairs in the country at present consequent to the executive presidency. That’s why we wanted it to be abolished soon,” he added.
