MR has violated SLFP constitution: Kabir

-

The UNP, which is the oldest party in Sri Lanka, is in the process of naming its Presidential Candidate in the very near future with the agreement of the party and the candidate would be selected in a democratic manner

UNP Chairman Minister Kabir Hashim yesterday asked how anyone could trust former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to uphold the country’s rule of law when he had violated his own party (SLFP) constitution by forming a new party and becoming its leader.

Issuing a statement, Minister Hashim said, “Mahinda Rajapaksa who has violated the party’s constitution by this act cannot be trusted to uphold the rule of law in the country. He has named his brother, an American citizen, as the new party’s Presidential Candidate while he is an accused before the courts on several charges, thereby going against the country’s laws and misleading the public.”

“The UNP, which is the oldest party in Sri Lanka, is in the process of naming its Presidential Candidate in the very near future with the agreement of the party and the candidate would be selected in a democratic manner,” the statement added.

“The candidate nominated by us will be someone who loves the motherland and is a democratic leader who has not been charged in courts or before the general public. We are presenting a leader who respects all and is accepted by everyone of all communities and religions. He would possess a personality that would ensure the nation’s security. Our future Presidential Candidate would be one who could take the future generation towards a new world, who identifies the sufferings of the poor and down trodden and is an educated person who would respect the laws of the land and pledges to honour them at all costs,” the statement said.
