In the world of trends, things come and go. With the barely-there sandal’s popularity at an all-time high it’s hard to imagine what could rival the shoe that goes with absolutely everything. Sometimes, though, you need something that is a little bit more sturdy. Get set for the return of the square toe. I’ve been thinking a lot about shoe trends recently since I’ve been doing that dreaded closet spring clean. The shoe trend I never hopped on board with is the flatform which personally makes me nauseous, turns out that was a good thing because thankfully it’s over!

The square-toe shoe is this year's shape to covet a cross between the angular and curvedshaped counterparts, the square toe silhouette is everywhere for 2019. Kourtney Kardashian recently posted the sold out Botegga Veneta version from her holiday in Positano to her 80 million followers cementing the trend as a favourite among Instagram influencers, editors, and buyers at of-the-moment fashion retailers. With the silhouette continuing to dominate the runways this beloved 90’s style shows no signs of slowing down.

While a pointed or round-toe shoe has reigned supreme throughout much of recent history, the squaretoe style has been around since the medieval age, when wooden blocks were strapped to the feet of commoners.

Sandals or closed-toe shoes were reserved for the upper classes, while the poor had to field splinters as they clobbered their way through the streets.

Square-toe shoes were given a bad reputation for being clumpy, garish and the victim of many a fashion critic's derision. But after years spent hiding at the back of closets, angular shaped footwear is making a comeback, despite their rocky journey through the history books.

Like many trends that are now looked back on in horror, it was during the 90s that square-toe shoes really had their moment in the sun. Prada led the way with closed-toe kitten heels, before the style was adapted for boots and barely-there sandals.

Fast-forward to the present day and, just like clockwork, this ‘90s staple has reappeared on the catwalks and in stores around the world. The modern take on the square-toe shoe is minimal sandals, as spotted on the runway at Saint Laurent, or as flat, angular mules seen from Balenciaga’s collection.
