Elpitiya poll activities remain calm

Police Media Spokespers­on Ruwan Gunasekara said yesterday that activities connected with the conduct of the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha Elections are proceeding in a peaceful manner with no untoward incidents being reported. He also said Police Special Task Force (STF) officials and antiriot squads have been deployed.

Election for the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha would be held at 47 Polling centres, out of which 38 are located in the Elpitiya Police Division, while nine would be located in the Pitigala Police area

SP Gunasekara made these revelation­s at a media briefing held at the Elpitiya SP Office. Director of the Elections Secretaria­t of the Police Headquarte­rs SP Ashoka Dharmasena and SP in charge of the Elpitiya Division Buddhi Udugamasur­iya too were present at this media briefing.

He said further that the election for the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha would be held at 47 Polling centres, out of which 38 are located in the Elpitiya Police Division, while nine would be located in the Pitigala Police area. The polling centres would have four police officers deployed totalling 188 police officers who would provide security and related services.

There are five polling centres with senior women officers as returning officers. A woman police officer would be deployed on duty at these centres in addition to the four police officers. Accordingl­y, 47 polling centres would be provided with four policemen each and a woman police officer for the five polling centres under the Women returning officers.

Also, 193 Police officers would be deployed in this manner for duty on the day of the election.
