Coming events cast their shadows

- MELVILLE PERERA

The Elpitiya election results must have sent permanent shivers down the affected spine bending pundits.as expressed by an MP via a TV channel a few hours before the results were announced, it was a stronghold of the ruling party equivalent to the Colombo electorate and could never be defeated.the defeat must have been unbelievable and unbearable also in spite of the show of strength and forced popularity at Galle Face Green the previous day. Every trick in the book was resorted to by the ruling coalition. But the intelligent, wise voters, most of them simple rural folk on whose votes the aspiring candidate is depending on, knew better and had the last laugh.

The resounding defeat by the new party at the LG polls on Feb 10, 2018 still speaks volumes. But the ruling coalition, violating legitimate democratic principles, continued with their self-benefiting self-styled crooked undemocratic agenda, constantly blaming the previous regime for the “woes” they took over while hiding all the evils they resorted to. The Elpitiya voters unhesitantly declared “enough is enough”.

With the results now firmly confirmed, the PM appears to be fighting shy to officially acknowledge defeat like he did in 2018. Rumours are now afloat that political opportunistic record breaking hurdlers, long jumpers, pole vaulters etc., are in readiness to join the hopeful forthcoming game of musical chairs to the tune of ‘He’s a jolly good fellow’.
