Vijayans Trophy to commence on October 26

The 20th edition of the ‘Vijayans Trophy’ All-island Open Inter-club Hockey Sevens Tournament 2019 organized and conducted by the Matale Vijayans Sports Club together with the Past Pupils Associatio­n of Vijaya College, Matale will get underway at the Bernard Aluvihare Stadium and the Edward Park hockey ground in Matale on October 26 and 27 commencing at 7.30 am on both days.

This tournament is a much awaited and much talked-about tournament in the hill country and has won the hearts of the many club hockey players who have taken part in the previous 19 editions of the tournament. This tournament has attracted not only the best teams amongst clubs affiliated to the Sri Lanka Hockey Federation but overseas teams as well.

According to Major B.G.R. Fernando, head of the organizing committee, this year’s tournament has attracted 27 club teams (16 Men’s teams and 11 Women’s teams) including Army, Navy, Air Force, Police and a team from India.

In addition to the coveted Vijayans Challenge Trophy for the Men’s champions, the winners and runners-up of both categories are entitled to receive the following cash prizes. Men’s champions will recive - Rs. 50,000, Women’s champions - Rs.25,000, Men’s runner-up - Rs. 25,000 will recive and Women’s runner-up Rs. 15,000. Last year, Police SC took custody of the Vijayans’ Trophy as they beat Kothalawal­a Defense University 2-1 in the final, while Master VIP team won the Women’s title defeating Masters Sri Lanka 1-0 on penalties.
