Three behind bars for string of robberies
Goods worth more than Rs.1 mn recovered
An organised gang including a young couple wanted in connection with a series of robberies in several areas was arrested by the Angunakolapelessa Police during a raid in Weeraketiya. They recovered a large stock of property stolen from several areas islandwide.
Police officers who arrested one of the suspects on information received from the public that he was selling TV sets and electronic equipment for a song, questioned him only to find he, his wife and brotherin-law had entered shops and houses in several areas including Veyangoda, Wadduwa, Weeraketiya, Nittambuwa, Kottawa, Pannipitiya, Kosgala, Marawila and Angunakolapelessa by breaking open the doors and stolen electrical appliances and textile.
Under interrogation, he provided information leading to the arrest of the other two suspects at Debarawewa. During further investigations, the police recovered ten TV sets, a laptop, two cellular phones and a stock of textile that had been sold to several individuals for cheap prices. Police said the goods recovered were valued at more than Rs.1 million.
Investigations revealed that they were wanted by Mahara, Panadura and Walasmulla Police and were under arrest warrants issued by the Magistrate’s Court in the respective areas. A police team under Angunakolapelessa OIC Inspector H.t.m.thushara is conducting further investigations on the instructions of ASP Ratnaweera Addasuriya.
