PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES AND PROTECTION OF ENVIRONMENT

-

These days we hear the presidential candidates giving various promises on various matters. They also say what they have done and achieved. They should also tell the country what they have already done to protect the environment and must say how they would when they become the next President, as this is an important subject.

Environment protection is the practice of protecting the natural environment by individuals, organizations and government. Healthy ecosystems clean our water, purify our air, maintain our soil, regulate the climate, recycle nutrients and provide us with food.

Natural resources are things that we depend on in our everyday lives. Food, water, and clean air are three natural resources that we depend on constantly. We have the responsibility towards these resources and that is not to deplete them. We have to stand up and take responsibility and save the resources before they are gone. Mahatma Gandhi once said “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed” Every Sri Lankan should plant and nurture at least one tree. One fully grown tree absorbs 20 kg of carbon dioxide and release 14 kg of oxygen.

Today there is a constant climate change in the universe. Deforestation, industrialization, transportation and emission of carbon dioxide have caused serious damage to the ozone layer, leading to increased warming of the Earth. These contribute to major causes of floods and droughts.

Keep your living place clean, try to grow a tree every year you live. If everybody does this, we can save our globe by ourselves.
