Bohra Community Head donates Cancer Institute
Dawoodi Bohra Community Head Dr. Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS offered a donation of Rs.5 million to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Maharagama, towards infrastructure and capacity expansion of its Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (BMTU).
“The donation given by Syedna will provide the much-needed superior stem cell transplant procedures and care for patients with life-threatening blood conditions such as leukemia and thalassemia,” said local public relations co-ordinator Mufaddal Adamjee.
“It will also greatly reduce the financial hardships that are usually incurred for such patients, whose only other option is to avail themselves of such procedures overseas at a huge burden to the families,” Mufaddal added.
NCI MD Dr. Nishan Siriwardena said, “Currently, there are only two beds allocated to the Stem Cell Transplant unit at the NCI. This donation will help us to increase this number to eight dedicated beds that will give many patients the opportunity to benefit from the life-saving bone marrow treatment.” Dr. Saifuddin has always devoted resources in improving healthcare and providing the latest in medical care facilities. In addition to his contribution towards NCI’S stem cell transplant unit, Syedna has also recently offered a donation of Rs.10 million to enhance facilities and improve welfare and preventative care for patients impacted by chronic kidney disease.
Dr. Saifuddin recently led the ‘Ashara Mubaraka 2019’ congregation in Colombo, which attracted over 27,000 Dawoodi Bohras from across 40 countries from around the world. He also met President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe and several other dignitaries. In his sermons he espoused the fact that patriotism and love of the motherland is fundamental to one’s faith.
