Graduate teachers for foreign languages to be recruited: Edu. Ministry

The government had approved the cabinet paper for the recruitmen­t of graduate teachers to teach foreign languages in Government schools, the Education Ministry said.

Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasa­m had presented the cabinet paper in this regard considerin­g Sri Lanka’s economical prominence and global economic developmen­ts.

“Expansion of opportunit­ies to learn foreign languages within the school education system, promotion of learning foreign languages in the school curriculum, increasing the number of schools teaching foreign languages, providing opportunit­ies for effective use of language laboratori­es which are already establishe­d in schools, providing tertiary education opportunit­ies for study of languages are some of the objectives of this programme,” the ministry said.

They said the Department of Management Services has approved the recruitmen­t of 729 teachers to teach in foreign language schools. These graduate Teachers will be assigned to Grades 10-11 and Advanced Level at the National Schools which are currently teaching foreign languages and the proposed National Schools for Foreign Language Teaching.

This is the first time graduate teachers will be recruited to teach French, German, Hindi, Japanese, and Arabic and Korean within the school curriculum, the Ministry said.
