- BY YOHAN PERERA AND INDIKA ARUNAKUMARA

Under the influence of this system, showery condition is likely to continue over most parts of the island (particularly in the Uva, Southern, Western, North-western, Central, Sabaragamuwa and Eastern provinces) during the next two days

Adverse weather conditions brought on by the atmospheric disturbance in the southwest Bay of Bengal had caused a mini flood situation in Puttalam, Vavuniya and Mullaitivu area while ten houses have been damaged as a result of a tornado in Medirigiriya in the Polonnaruwa District.

Our correspondents said A9 road had also come under water in some areas. More than 8,000 families were said to have been affected by the weather conditions.

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said sluice gates of Deduru Oya, Thabbowa, Rajanganaya, Angamuwa, Canyon and Laxapana have been opened.

Meanwhile the Department of Meteorology said the atmospheric disturbance in the southwest Bay of Bengal to the south of Sri Lanka is likely to move to the western sea area of the island in the coming days. “Under the influence of this system, showery condition is likely to continue over most parts of the island (particularly in the Uva, Southern, Western, North-western, Central, Sabaragamuwa and Eastern provinces) during the next two days,” the Department said.

The Department forecast very heavy falls between (150-200) mm in the Uva, Southern, Western, Northwestern, Central, Sabaragamuwa and Eastern provinces. Heavy falls about 100 mm can be expected at some places elsewhere.

Windy condition is expected to increase up to (50-60) kmph at times over the island. High winds are also expected in the sea areas around the island. Several areas including Batticaloa, Mullaitivu and Vavuniya experienced rains over 100mm as of yesterday.
