PRETTY PLEATS

Celine, Dior, Valentino, Burberry & Off- White all did beautiful takes on the pleated skirt

The fashion world has a very mixed opinion about the pleated skirt. It was off the radar for an age and considered dated. Then a resurgence over the past few seasons, it really was back and exploded out of proportion. It's beloved by celebs who are often seen sporting pleats and I think it offers the perfect blend of street style and sophistication.

The pleated skirt's popularity is partly down to the fact that they're really photogenic. They might not be desk-jobfriendly (those wrinkles from sitting down do tend to spoil a pleat's line) but when snapped moving – as on an insta-fashion star on the way to a fashion show – or an influencer posing insouciantly, they have a pleasing three-dimensional quality that an A-line mini or pencil skirt just can't claim.

For A/W 19 they've received an upgrade - in luxe leather, shimmer metallics, sparkly sequins and those craving the defined silhouette of pleats, the season's latest trend brings visual interest to the favoured midi hemlines rendered in box or knife varieties that sashays sexily around the knee as they go.

Celine, Dior, Valentino, Burberry Off- White

& all did beautiful takes on the pleated skirt, swishy, tough, billowing, dressed up, dressed down. Who knew pleats could look quite so good? Pleats have been Sri Lankan schoolgirl staple with most uniforms including some style of pleats, but the thing to note with the pleated skirt now though is where at school it blended into a background of predominantly white now it should be your focal piece that steals all of the outfit action. Wear it with something simple and uncluttered up top - a white shirt or simple T-shirt. Be careful to keep the silhouette clean and don't go overboard with it.
