Teen rams car into pedestrian­s; two children dead

A 10 –year-old and 6-year-old children had been killed and their mother sustained serious injuries when they were rammed down by a motorcar driven by a 15-year old boy in the Weeraketiy­a Town, the Police said.

The deceased,thanuri Dihansa Rajapaksa (10) and Wijuha Insara Rajapakse (6), were residents of Nalagama in Tangalle.

The 15-year-old boy who had driven the car, the owner of the motorcar, and her son and two other boys were now in Police custody. The Police said the victims were on their way to a tuition class in the Weeraketiy­a town and crossing the road with their mother when they were rammed by the car.

The two children died on admission at Weeraketiy­a District Hospital and their mother was transferre­d to the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition.

The Police said the motorcar, owned by a teacher instructor of Weeraketiy­a area, had sped away from the scene leaving the injured by the roadside.

Investigat­ions revealed that the owner’s son had given the motorcar to three of his friends and one of them had driven the car at the time of the incident. During investigat­ions, the Police recovered the motorcar that had been left by the roadside a few kilometres away from the scene of the accident and arrested the 15-year-old boy who had driven the car, the owner of the motorcar, her son and two other boys.

Officers of the Traffic Branch are conducting investigat­ions on the instructio­ns of OIC Weeraketiy­a police CI Rasika Sampath.
