The country needs a brave leader

- BY NADEEKA DAYA BANDARA

The country needs a brave president who will not betray the country, and the people should be cautious to elect such a person at a time when the stage has been set for signing agreements detrimental to the interests of the country, said Ven. Ellawala Medhananda Thera in a statement issued by him.

He said it was important that all have confidence in Gotabaya as the only leader who could usher in an environment conducive for all - Sinhala, Muslim, tamil, to live in harmony.

Continuing, he says in his statement, that a conspiracy is underway to destroy the national heritage.“most of the archaeological sites which I identified in the north and east before, during and after the war have been completely destroyed.

“A large number of these places have been transformed into paddy fields after demolishing the ancient Chaithyas which were on those lands and in some other places, kovils have replaced these ruins. In some places, stone pillars of archaeological value have been used to build sanitary construction.”

He laments that the appeals made on several occasions to the authorities about these unfortunate state of affairs remained inattentive.

“We tried to convince those in authority that these ancient places were of national interest and not confined to a single race. However even Tamil political leaders have not understood this importance. Their aim is to destroy these archaeological places as evident in their demands presented in connection with the presidential election, claiming the ownership of these ancient places.

“Under these circumstances the only leader we can rely on to usher peace among all the races, develop and protect the country and withstand undue foreign involvement is Gotabaya. He has proved his capability through performance, instead of merely giving promises.”

He concludes his statement by appealing to all, to have confidence in Gotabaya to achieve these goals.
