GOTA ASSURES UNI FOR ESTATE SECTOR STUDENTS

SLPP presidenti­al candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday pledged to set up a university to cater to the students in the estate sector. Addressing a rally in Kotagala, Hatton, he said he met a group of youth in the area prior to the rally and they complained how they lacked university facilities.

“They told me that their option of a university was Jaffna’s but they can’t afford to go to Jaffna and stay there for years. We have pledged to invest largely in the education sector and create new universiti­es as a part of that need. Therefore, we will establish a university to cater the students in the estate sector as well,” he said.

Apart from a university, Mr. Rajapaksa said infrastruc­ture provided at schools would be improved overall and English and Maths teachers

would also be recruited. He said they had a better understand­ing about the issues in the estate sector. “That’s why we want to improve the quality of your living standards. While reiteratin­g that Rs.1,000 would be given as the daily wage to estate workers, Mr. Rajapaksa said the youths in the area need to venture into other employment opportunit­ies as well.
