GINIGATHHENA PRIMARY SCHOOL SWEEP THE BOARD
The Central Province Kids Athletic Championship for kids in the grades of three, four and five conducted by the primary section of the Central Province Education Department with the blessings of the Ministry of Education and sponsored by Nestle Lanka Ltd came to an end with the completion of the Grade 5 events which was held at the Digana Sports Complex.
Ginigathhena Primary School swept the board by emerging champions in the boys’ and girls’ segment while Ananda Dissanayake Primary School Kothmale clinched the mixed school title. In fact Ginigathhena PS and Ananda Dissanayake PS won their second age group title with the former winning the Grade 3 title and the latter Grade 4.
Boys’ champions Ginigathhena PS secured 138 points with Kathiresan Primary School Gampola coming in second (136) and Vidyartha Kandy in third (135).
In the girls’ category Ginigathhena PS secured 148 points followed by Ankumbura PS Katugastota (144) and Vidyapradeepa PS in third (141) while in the mixed school Ananda Dissanayake PS secured 155 points with Agarapathana MV Nuwara Eliya in second (154) and Alakolawewa PS Walapane in third (159).
Qualifying championships were held in all the provinces where the top three schools in the three categories (Grade 3, 4 and 5) being eligible to compete at the All Island Kids Athletics Championship which is scheduled to be held in December at Nawalapitiya. The championship comprised of five main events of hurdles, rope skipping, forward squatting, cross hopping and knee throw which is being held with the aim of encouraging the school children to get involved in sports activities.
The championship saw the participation of over 3000 kids in the three categories boys’, girls’ and mixed schools of the grade three, four and five from schools in the Central Province.
