SLIC provides protection for diabetes patients with Comprehens­ive D+plan

Diabetes, once considered a disease of the developed world, has today become a worldwide pandemic.

There is an alarming increase of prevalence in diabetes in Sri Lanka, where a Colombo urban study shows that 27.1 percent of the Colombo urban population suffers from diabetes.

In Sri Lankan context, according to the statistics released by Internatio­nal Federation of Diabetes in 2017 states that 1.1 million adults (2079) are suffering from diabetes comparativ­e prevalence of diabetes is 10.7 percent. Adults with undiagnose­d diabetes (20-79) are 428,000 and mean diabetes-related expenditur­e per person (20-79) with diabetes is US$ 184.8 (approximat­ely Rs. 34,000). Diabetes related deaths (2079 years) in Sri Lanka amounts to 15,534.

In the global scale by 2017, there are approximat­ely 425 million adults (20-79 years) were living with diabetes and by 2045 the figure will be expected to rise to 629 million.

Diabetes caused 4 million deaths and more than 21 million live births (1 in 7 births) were affected by diabetes during pregnancy. Most common causes for the diabetes are unhealthy dietary patterns, unhealthy lifestyle and generic factors of Sri Lankans. People tend to consume high energy dense food instead of low energy dense food and people are reluctant to do physical exercises.

While the statistics reflect the severity of the status of the most common non communicab­le disease, insurers are reluctant to provide insurance cover for people with diabetes. As a result diabetes patients does not have an alternativ­e to cover their medical expenses instead of bear them by themselves.

As the insurer of the nation SLIC understand­s the utmost gravity of the issue and took a leap forward by introducin­g a dedicated health insurance cover to diabetes patients.

The Sri Lanka Insurance Comprehens­ive D+ life and health insurance cover was introduced to the market as a social cause providing peace of mind to the diabetes patients.

The Comprehens­ive D+ plan helps diabetes patients to gain access to the best hospitals and medical treatment for diabetes, ensuring peace of mind and financial assistance to the policyhold­er. Policyhold­ers can choose from 3 available packages depending on the required medical care and type of diabetes: Category A: Rs. 200,000 cover, Category B: Rs. 400,000 cover, Category C: Rs. 600,000 cover.

The Comprehens­ive D+ plan Wide coverage of expenses including nursing expenses, ICU expenses, operation theatre charges, room charges as well as surgeon, anesthetis­t, medical practition­er, consultant and specialist fees.

This health cover can be obtained together with Divi Thilina, Minimuthu, Minimuthu Parithyaga, Praguna, Yasaisuru, Freedom, Minimuthu Dayada, and Janadiri life insurance policies and it has flexibilit­y to add on the spouse so that for both policyhold­er and spouse are covered till the age of 65.
