TRANSPORT GARBAGE

TENDER TO HIRE LORRIES TO

- BY YOHAN PERERA

Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) could lose Rs.320 million as a result of the tender which the CMC had gone ahead with to hire lorries to transport garbage to the Aruwakkalu sanitary landfill site, a member of CMC said yesterday.

A resolution to hire vehicles was passed on October 31, with 70 members including UNP, UPFA and few SLPP members voting in favour of the resolution while some in SLPP and JVP voted against.

JVP member of the CMC Hemantha Kumara told Daily Mirror that the total amount which is to be spent would be Rs. 720 million for the 40 vehicles. “It is a crime as the CMC could have purchased vehicles for a cost of Rs.400 million. We objected to the resolution on this grounds,” he said.

Meanwhile, another member of the Municipal Council who did not want to be named said the number of vehicles which are to be hired was increased from 30 to 40 vehicles this time.

Also, this member said there was an argument between the Mayor Rosy Senanayake and SLPP member of the Council Sharmila Gonawala.

Ms Gonawala had alleged that responsible persons in CMC are trying to earn out of this tender while Mayor Senanayake had vehemently denied saying that she has no intentions of earning in such ways and that she had not done so at any time.

A similar resolution was passed to hire vehicles for garbage transport on September 30 where the opposition members of the council alleged of frauds with regard to awarding of the tender.

However, the Mayor denied these allegations as well. She was quoted saying that there is a possibility of cancelling the contract any moment as per the clauses.
