IN A NUTSHELL

2019 was probably the worst ever year for me and the majority of us. It worsened after the Easter attacks. There seemed to be no hope until the Presidential Election results were announced in November. In a flash people seemed happier and of a better temperament. Compared with last year’s gloomy Christmas, this year’s has taken an 180 degree turn and the city is buzzing. Well, maybe not for all those sore losers.

Colombo will always be Colombo. Not having such a good financial year lots of the usual so called Colombo Society are not throwing too many bashes. Nevertheless, with hotels lighting up trees and mixing cake ingredients could be counted as an outing. The hypocrisy of Colombo’s lot yet remains. Whenever they go to meet people and enjoy their food and beverage, they will continue to happily tear them to pieces as if they are picture perfect. Honesty and loyalty are a thing of the past and it does not matter how one makes money there will always be people hanging around them.

Chatting to a person known to me, who is in the business of decorating establishments, homes etc. for Christmas, I learned that collecting payment from the clients is her biggest nightmare. After the season the clients do not even bother to pick up her telephone calls. This is the same in many areas of the service industry. It seems to be the fashion to cheat hard-working people of their earnings. Suppliers too have

the same issues.

Mother nature too has not been kind and many areas are experiencing bad weather and people have been affected badly. It seems nobody heeds the calls to protect nature even in a small way. With the change in leadership the majority of us are full of optimism and definitely 2020 will be a great year to look forward to. Whilst living with great hope for our country, we can always look forward to being amused by our Colombo lot who will be scheming and acting on new shenanigans.
