- BY RAVI LIYANAGE

A first year student attached to the Medical Faculty of the Peradeniya University has passed the G. C. E. (A/L) examination 2019, with three “A” passes in the Maths stream as well.

He was toying with the idea of joining the National Aeronautic Space Administration (NASA) in the USA.

He is A.S. Raveen Weeranayaka a resident of Poddala in Galle who is a first year student reading for his degree at the Medical Faculty of Peradeniya University.

Raveen is the eldest in the family of three, who has a twin brother and another sister. His father, S.H. Weeranayake is a technical officer in the Railway Department. His mother Nilanthi Samanlatha is a housewife.

Raveen and his brother had sat for the A/L examination the previous year (2018). Raveen followed the Bio stream and passed the exam with three “A” passes while his twin brother followed the Maths stream and both qualified to enter the university. However, Raveen sat for the A/L this year (2019) too in the Maths stream and was able to obtain three “A” passes in that stream as well.

Speaking to journalists about his success he said, “I am reading for a degree in the University of Peradeniya in the first year. My desire is to join NASA and I came to know that there should be two passes in two streams as qualifications to enter NASA. Then, I thought of sitting for A/L in Maths stream with that intention. That is why I sat for the exam as a private candidate.”

He said that he was really happy about his achievement and he appreciated the support given by his parents in this regard. He spoke of the patronage given by his school Richmond College as well.

He emphasized the fact that success can be achieved in any field with determination and commitment. He had set himself a target and achieved the success he wanted, he pointed out.

Raveen Weeranayake is an example for other students because he was able to qualify in two streams (Biology and Mathematics) at the A/L examination.
