A pooja performed to seek divine intervention for conception of a child by a banker couple in Badulla with the aid of an Indian couple specialized in such activity had a sour ending, when the latter vanished with 28 sovereigns of gold jewellery used in the rituals.

A banker from Badulla and his wife who had been married for three years had been desperately trying many things both medically and religiously to conceive a baby without success.

They received the good news from a relative about an Indian couple from Kerala, South India who specialised in performing poojas for various requirements in a nearby area.

The couple with the relative had visited the Indian couple and had invited them over to their house to perform a special pooja to seek conception of a child and soon the preparations were made.

The Indian couple who arrived at the banker’s house had commenced the pooja saying that it will require to be carried out for three consecutive days. They also requested the couple to gather all their gold jewellery of 28 sovereigns into a clay pot.

The couple were assured that the gold jewellery would be returned once the pooja and blessings were obtained.

The first day was concluded successfully in a shrine room of the house and the couple was asked to keep the clay pot with the jewellery intact as the Kerala couple left in the evening promising to come back on the following morning for the second day.

On the second day the pooja continued till evening before the couple who were made to sit on the shrine room floor were asked to turn towards the sunset for a special ritual. The ritual in an unfamiliar language prevailed for about 20 minutes concluded whilst the couple was turning their back towards the clay pot.

The foreigners then left saying that they will be back on the third day and requested that the pot of jewellery should be left untouched. Since they did not turn up as promised the banker couple went in search for them to realize that their rented place had been vacated on the previous night. They had rushed back home to discover that jewellery in the pot had been substituted by some copper jewellery in place of the valuable gold jewellery which had gone missing.

It was too late when the couple realized that they had been deceived badly by the foreigners, who had left the country by the time the police investigations began.
