-

Reputed healthcare provider Hemas Hospitals closed out the year in spectacular fashion by taking home Gold awards in the Overall Large category and Healthcare Service Sector category, of the National Business Excellence Awards held on December 13, 2019.

The prestigious event, which is organised by the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (NCCSL), appreciates the exemplary efforts of the country’s top corporations in garnering them success in their respective sectors throughout the year.

“It is indeed deeply gratifying to take home two coveted Gold awards at such a celebrated national event. Such an honour does not just underscore the high standards of care on par with international standards and global best practices upheld at all of our hospitals and laboratories but also encourages us to expand the boundaries of the Sri Lankan healthcare sector by continually improving and innovating,” said Hemas Hospitals and Laboratories Managing Director and President, Association of Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes Dr. Lakith Peiris.

“These awards also celebrate the hard work and dedication of our staff, without which none of this would have been possible. They are the very embodiment of our operational ethos and are the reason I am supremely confident Hemas Hospitals will ascend to even greater heights in the years ahead.”

The winners of a National Business Excellence Award are subjected to a thorough evaluation process led by a panel of distinguished professionals and academics. The winners’ applications are first judged against a seven-point criterion before undergoing further assessment across three other stages consisting of a Desk Review, Interviews and the Judges’ Final Review.

Hemas Hospitals’ latest triumph adds to the series of eminent awards it has captured within the past six months. During this period it has walked home with a total of 18 top national and international accolades and in the process earned itself the title of the most feted hospital in Sri Lanka.

These trophies include three Healthcare Asia Awards and one Hospital Management Asia Award in the international arena, making it the only hospital group to claim a major foreign award this year, bringing international recognition to the Sri Lankan healthcare industry.

Meanwhile, within the local sphere, the organisation received three awards from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and nine Gold awards, one Silver award and one Bronze award from the National Convention for Quality and Productivity (NCQP).

Established in 2008 with the launch of its pioneering facility in Wattala, followed by a second hospital in Thalawathugoda, Hemas Hospitals has today grown into one of the most advanced hospital chains in Sri Lanka. A subsidiary of Hemas Holdings, one of Sri Lanka’s leading conglomerates with a focus on FMCG, healthcare, mobility and leisure, the hospital chain has pioneered global best practices in Sri Lanka, setting a steep benchmark for quality and patient safety. It is the first and only hospital chain in Sri Lanka to have been accredited by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards International (ACHSI), the gold seal of international hospital certification for safety and quality. The organisation provides a wide array of surgical and medical specialities and has established an islandwide network of clinical laboratories.

Piyawara, launched in partnership with the Children’s Secretariat of the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs, is the hospital chain’s flagship CSR initiative where over 53 preschools were constructed to house over 140 teachers and 3,200 children at an investment of over Rs.400 million.

This is in addition to Ayati, where the Hemas group tied hands with the University of Kelaniya, MAS Holdings and the Sri Lankan army to construct a state-of-the-art national rehabilitation centre for children with disabilities in Ragama - a project valued at Rs.650 million.
