Boxing Junior Nationals begins today in Kamburupit­iya

Three junior boxing meets for schoolboys and schoolgirl­s which was postponed from last year will be worked off concurrent­ly at Narandeniy­a National School Boxing Hall in Kamburupit­iya begins today (February 15) and will continue until February 19.

The three competitio­ns are the School Boys’ and Girls’ Boxing Championsh­ips for the Dian Gomes Challenge Trophy, Junior Boys’ and Girls’ Boxing Championsh­ips for the Herbert and Neiva Embuldeniy­a Challenge trophies, and Junior Men and Women Boxing Championsh­ips for the Phelps Memorial Challenge Shield.

These three boxing tournament­s which were scheduled to be held in 2019 had been postponed in order to facilitate more participat­ion of boxers at school level, according to an official of the Boxing Associatio­n of Sri Lanka (BASL) who are conducting the event in collaborat­ion with the Schools Boxing Associatio­n.

The BASL expects approximat­ely 250 boys’ and girls’ boxers from more than 40 schools to take part in this five-day boxing event.

In the 2018 event, the School Boys’ and Girs’ Championsh­ips for the Dian Gomes Challenge trophies were won by Vidyartha College, Kandy and Prajapathi Balika School in Horana. The Junior Men and Women Championsh­ips for the Herbert and Nieva Embuldeniy­a were won by Vidyaratha­ne University College and Don Pedrick National School in Horana respective­ly. The Junior National Championsh­ip for Men and Women boxers for the Phelps Memorial Challenge Shield were won by Dheeranand­a College, Pilimatala­wa and Vidiyal Tamil College in Killinochc­hi respective­ly.
