GIVING THE COLD SHOULDER

HAS NEVER BEEN COOLER

- By Minoli Ratnayake

Revealing some shoulder for 2020 isn’t such a bad idea, especially if you feel you look too severe or prim

Bare those shoulders, because this season shoulders are the new erogenous zone. Nothing is more in fashion at the moment than bare shoulders. Giving a little “cold shoulder” is completely appropriate right now! From showing them off in strapless dresses, to cold shoulder tops to jumpsuits as long as they reveal those collar bones – you've done the right outfit pick.

Revealing some shoulder for 2020 isn't such a bad idea, especially if you feel you look too severe or prim (as opposed to Fashion Severe or Fashion Prim) when every inch of you is covered. Personally, I think severity and primness can be done away with if you choose the right colour – no one looks severe covered up in red or yellow, for instance. But say you want to wear black or navy, then slivers of bare skin can be a lovely antidote – and what better slivers than the shoulders, which are pretty much foolproof when it comes to wrinkles, sagging or cellulite!

This year's Oscars saw a multitude of hollywood stars showing off their shoulders in strapless gowns cementing the trend for SS2020. The strapless silhouette is also a favourite among Colombo's fa sh io ni st as. shoulders area very neutral body part that always looks good. Fashion

thrown us an age-defying style that offers us a chic way to reveal some flesh and make the most of the latest erogenous zone. Shoulders are sensual in a more sophisticated way. Exposing them is very attractive and womanly, but doesn't have the same connotations as exposing cleavage or a lot of leg, so it feels a bit more subtle – and this resonates with women of all ages.

The cold shoulder seems to lend its wearer the coveted Siren sexy-but-elegant-at-thesame-time look, that really is fashion's holy grail. It's a classic look, one that stylish fashionistas – the girls who always look beautiful but don't bow down to every fickle trend have lauded. It lends a much more refined air to an outfit and gives you an instant fashion update that's pure class. If you're doing the trend with a dress make sure the length is midi as that will give a more modern silhouette. A bare shoulder with a sari is another great way to wear the trend.

And you don't have to flash it all. A glimpse is as good as an eyeful in these matters, either via specially designed keyhole cut-outs, a shirred peasant style top (which is set to be absolutely on trend for SS20) that cuts across the top of your chest or a top that's designed to casually slip off one shoulder. I prefer this last approach as I find the asymmetric shoulder line the most flattering. I also like the way it works with a bra, especially one with pretty straps. Do make sure to take extra care moisturising your shoulders if they'll be on display. Try mixing some of whatever radiance provider you use on your face into your body cream.

It's official: shoulders are officially “in”, and showing them off has become cool. From straight up cold shouldered tops to one-shouldered dresses and cut-out pieces, there are plenty of ways to rock this trend. It's elegant and it doesn't age. No one has bad shoulders. Either slashed to reveal just a peek of shoulder or done to reveal one full shoulder, it looks cool, is on trend and is perfect for the heat!
