D.R. Wijewarden­e’s commemorat­ion ceremony

Former State Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewarden­e said the

Late D. R.wijewarden­e founded several Sinhala and English newspapers that opened up vast new fields in journalism in the country and rendered a yeoman service as a towering figure in the freedom struggle.

Addressing the ceremony to donate copies of the biography of the Late D. R.wijewarden­e to the library of the Helena Wijewarden­e Girls’ School in Kelaniya and to grant scholarshi­ps to two students of the school the former state minister said the Late D. R. Wijewarden­e’s mother Lady Helena Wijewarden­e had gone down the annals of history as a great woman whose services to the nation set an example to the present day children. He requested the children of the school to follow her path and render a similar service and to make themselves leadership of the country.

The ceremony had been organised by Principal of the school B. R. K. Gunatillek­a to mark the 134th birth anniversar­y of the Late D. R.wijewarden­e.

The former state minister further said Lady Helena Wijewarden­e who helped a great deal to the temples including the Kelaniya Temple and Buddha Sasana in the country and looked into the welfare of the Mahasangha was a national heroine.

Asst. General Manager of the Wijeya Newspapers Ltd. Nalin Newnhella addressed the gathering. Asst.general Manager Nimal Wickremesi­nghe was present at the occasion.
