Medics have repeatedly said that one of the ways to avoid being vulnerable to the Coronaviru­s is to have a strong immune system. Shedding light on its importance, Dr. N. Madhuwanth­i Hettiarach­chi, Consultant Physician in Internal Medicine, Teaching Hospital, Peradeniya recommende­d several immune boosters.

“Have as many Vitamin C-rich foods such as guava, nelli, jambola, papaya, raw drumstick leaves, carrot leaves and the like. Drink at least two liters of water per day and you can even have King coconut water, coriander water to keep yourself hydrated as much as possible.you can also consume pulses, legumes and egg yolk.

“What you should avoid are sweetened beverages, junk food and it is a must to avoid consuming alcohol and smoking.you also have to wash your hands for 20 seconds prior to preparing food and then do the same before and after eating. It was revealed that many people who died in other countries were over 65 years of age and were heavy smokers.

But children have a less chance of developing complicati­ons of this virus as not many young deaths were reported.those with chronic conditions and are on immunosupp­ressants as well as heart, asthmatic and COPD patients too are at risk. Patients undergoing dialysis too need to take extra precaution­s. It is also important to have six to eight hours of adequate sleep.”

“Another way to keep away from infection is to gargle the mouth with antiseptic­s. Even salt water is a good remedy and try to consume warm drinks as much as possible,” she

added.
