WCIC launches inaugural Business Book Club

-

The Women’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce (WCIC) launched its inaugural Business Book Club with Sri Lankan writer, editor, publisher, sociologist and entrepreneur Ameena Hussein, on June 24, virtually.

WCIC Board Member and SCOR Literary Salon Founder Sarrah Sammoon moderated the session.

WCIC Chairperson Chathuri Ranasinghe in her launch address said, “Books bring us together but meaningful conversations will transform all our lives. The WCIC Business Book Club is focused on convening like-minded entrepreneurs and professionals to diversify own reading habits and make new connections with the guests. It stems from the belief that reading is an essential component of leadership development. We will be having online sessions until we can meet in person when it is safe to do so.”

She thanked all those who linked up on line for their interest to be part of the Business Book Club. By joining the Business Book Club, the WCIC expects that the members and guests will gain support to commit to a systematic reading habit and conversations with the special guests to develop a deep reading habit and understand diverse perspectives better.

One of the WCIC’S objectives is to build the capacity of its members. Forming a business book club will promote healthy entrepreneurship in Sri Lanka through self- education and discussion. Being a successful entrepreneur means being able to constantly learn, being updated on trends and reinvent, readjust and rework yourself and your organisations. Thus knowledge is one of your most powerful tools. The best way to do this is by reading.

The WCIC would decide on books or discussions for the year that would make a particular impact in driving an entrepreneurship mindset and demonstrate new innovative methods and case studies. The discussions will stay close to the WCIC objectives by: sparking a conversation around entrepreneurship and how we can apply this to grow the Sri Lankan economy, figuring out how to apply these learnings and concepts to our businesses, promoting and sharing our personal stories, generating new ideas and thought patterns and being a platform for innovators to pitch ideas and receive feedback.

The WCIC is the premier organisation supporting entrepreneurs and professional businesswomen. With a wellstructured board of management and pillar teams and leaders with dedicated responsibility, the organisation focuses on achieving its detailed objectives with a clearly defined strategic plan, as well as a plan in to action. The membership is open to women who believe they can contribute to society as well as benefit from the many facilities the organisation creates.
