WHY FEAR DEATH THROUGH COVID VIRUS?

John was forty two when he contracted the Corona Virus and his family were devastated when he died six weeks later.

All over the world, the Pandemic has spread and people are afraid because they may die if they contract the Virus. One can even die of Dengue. Death is the ultimate which is why so many are afraid of the Covid-19 Virus.

Dr.m.scott Peck is a psychiatrist and has written many books including the New York Times bestseller “The Road Less Travelled and Beyond”. In it he says that people can live better once they accept Death.

Perhaps one can live better if one lives each day as if it was one’s last day on earth. One can tell and show one’s loved ones that they matter and that love comes first.

The main problem is that no-one has come back after Death to tell what it is like. So it is the fear of the Unknown.

The Pandemic has also resulted in many people realising that life on earth is temporary. They have started thinking of the Afterlife.

In countries like Sri Lanka the majority of inhabitants are born into an orthodox religion and automatically follow the religion of their parents.

The majority of Sri Lankans are Buddhist and they believe that one is reborn after death. They believe that one continues on the journey of “Samsara” and is reborn as human or animal and gains merit until the ultimate achievement of “Nibbana” or Nothingness.

Hindus also believe in Rebirth until they reach ‘Moksha’ or Heaven.

Christians and Muslims on the other hand believe that there is only one life and that one goes to Heaven or Hell after death. If one has led a good life on earth one goes to Heaven after death after expiating the sins of this life. In the USA, the Pandemic has resulted in hundreds of deaths and many Americans are petrified. Many were born into Christian families but they

do not practise a religion which is probably why they fear death. They attend christenings, weddings and funerals but apart from that they live a life where they do not believe in a God. A job, raising children, going to supermarkets and going on trips sum up the lives of the majority of urban people. So when death or disease come their way, they are unable to cope and their first reaction is fear, fear of the unknown.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has named the Pandemic and all over the world, Covid-19 has spread and infected hundreds if not thousands.

The death rate is high while in countries like Sri Lanka, there is also a high rate of recovery from Covid-19.

Perhaps the time has come for everyone to live a life while preparing for death so that there will be no fear or surprise when death comes as it inevitably will!

Those who have had Near Death experiences report that there is light and a feeling of happiness so that there is no need to fear Death.
