TAKING CENTRAL BANK STAFF TO TASK HAS NOT BROUGHT ANY RESULTS: RUWAN

- BY YOHAN PERERA

Taking of the Central Bank staff to task has not brought any result as the adverse economic effect caused by COVID-19 has not been resolved yet, UNP Deputy General Secretary Ruwan Wijewardene said yesterday.

Speaking during an election rally in Ja-ela , Mr. Wijewardene said there is a great deal of uncertainty when it comes to the health of the Sri Lankan people in addition to the economic crisis.

“It is doubtful whether the efforts made by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to get involved in formulating economic policies bypassing the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank has brought any results,” Mr. Wijewardene said.

“The request made by former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to convene Parliament in order to initiate a dialogue among all parties and decide on ways and means to face the COVID-19 crisis was turned down by the government. The government only thought of its political aspirations,” he added.

He said the previous UNP led government faced both natural and man made disasters but managed to gain much for the people unlike the present government which has not managed to tackle the economic and health issues which the country is facing.

Former Ministers John Amaratunga, Arjuna Ranatunga, Amal Rodrigo and Kithsiri Manchanayake also participated in the meeting.
