We will focus on educating public about 20A : Akila

UNP will not seek political advantage on the new situation with regard to COVID-19 in Sri Lanka but will continue to educate the general public on the proposed 20th Amendment, Party General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasa­m said yesterday.

We have not decided as to who would be appointed to Parliament from the national list

Mr.kariywasam told a press conference that his party will not fish in troubled waters but would like to stress that the government as a whole,the head of state and the cabinet should set an example in the wake of the new episode with regard to COVID-19.

“We hope that the schools were closed after a careful study of the situation without making a mere autocratic decision to close them,”

Mr.kariyawasa­m who was the former Minister of Education said.

Mr.kariyawasa­m who elaborated on the petition he had filed at the Supreme Courts against the 20th Amendment said it is a piece of legislatio­n which should be totally rejected.the UNP General

Secretary said he had raised 22 points with regard to the amendment.these he said include the violation of people’s sovereignt­y, increasing of President’s powers and the virtual transfer of Sri Lanka into monarchy, re introducti­on of emergency

Bills in Parliament and abolition of restrictio­ns imposed on the number of members in the cabinet, deputy, state and non cabinet ministers from the 19th Amendment. “We have not decided as to who would be appointed to Parliament from the national list.however the party reforms will be made by December this year,”he also said.
