T here has never been a time where hand hygiene mattered more than the period in which we live in at present. The world is engulfed in a crisis where individuals fear stepping out of their own homes due to the uncertainty that looms in the air. Regardless of the threats imposed, it is impossible to remain idle since individuals have to accept the fact that the pandemic situation will prevail till a cure is determined. Therefore it is important to adapt to the ‘new normal’.

It is prudent to understand that the threat can be mitigated by following the mandated safety precautions. That is to wear safety masks at all times, and to maintain perfect hand hygiene from morning till night.

Hand hygiene does not include washing the hands just for the sake of maintaining cleanliness. It is true that water cleanses the hand from dust and dirt, but the underlying germs and bacteria are yet to be eliminated. Therefore it is best to use bacterial removal hand washing agents along in order to complete the task more effectively.

While on the topic of hand hygiene, it is important to take note of the role which hand sanitizers play during the fight to keep the user’s hand free from harmful germs and bacteria. A quick analysis of the invaluable contribution of hand sanitizers during the fight with COVID-19 will be presented in order to give readers a better awareness.

The following are the excerpts from an interview carried out with Safe Guard.

Q. WHAT ARE HAND SANITIZERS?

Hand sanitizers, also referred to as hand antiseptics is an agent applied to hands for the purpose of removing common pathogens which are commonly identified as disease causing organisms. These sanitizers come in different forms; gel or in liquid form.

Hand sanitizers are mostly recommended to be used when it is difficult to gain access to soap or water. This is a perfect way of infection control in a wide variety of settings, from kindergarten, to schools, hospitals, work places and even a handy product to carry around during a person’s daily travels.

Q. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF HAND SANITIZERS?

Hand sanitizers can be classified under two categories depending on the active ingredient used; alcohol based and alcohol free. Alcohol based products typically contain between 60% and 90% alcohol, usually in the form of ethanol, isopropanol or n-propanol. At the afore mentioned concentrations, the alcohol immediately denatures proteins which in turn effectively neutralizes certain types of microorganism.

Alcohol-free products are generally based on disinfectants, such as benzalkonium chloride (BAC), or on antimicrobial agents, such as triclosan.the activity of disinfectants and antimicrobial agents are both immediate and persistent. Many hand sanitizers also contain emollients (e.g., glycerin) that soothe the skin, thickening agents, and fragrance.

Q. WHAT MAKES SAFE GUARD THE IDEAL HAND SANITIZER?

Q. WHAT MAKES HAND SANITIZERS MORE EFFICIENT?

It is impractical to expect water or soap to wash your hand whenever the need arises. In fact, there are places and locations which do not have access to clean water even to satisfy the daily needs of the community. Does that mean that those individuals are destined to be a prime target for this deadly disease?

In certain situations, the party that is affected more is the children. The children and the youth have significant social interactions during their many outings and leisurely excursions with their peers. The inability to access water leaves them vulnerable to coming into contact with contaminated objects, or even hand-to hand contact from a contaminated individual. Thereafter it is only a matter of time where a chain reaction is set off where the disease is transmitted from one person to another.

This is where hand sanitizers come into action. Individuals do not have to fear the lack of water, since there is always a solution to maintain hand hygiene. Hand sanitizers come in portable packaging such as mini bottles, which make it convenient to carry around wherever the user wishes to visit. The user only has to pour a smidgen on to their palms, rub both hands together thoroughly (making sure to cleanse every edge and corner) and then carry on their merry way. Hand sanitizers do not leave any traces of soap or water therefore there is no need to wipe the hands after use.

Q. WHAT FACTORS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED BEFORE SELECTING A HAND SANITIZER?

The primary consideration that should be made is to determine if it is produced in accordance to the relevant international standards. The other concern is the alcohol percentage. It is ideal if the product’s alcohol content is 70% volume/volume. The expected results cannot be achieved if the afore mentioned criteria is not met.

Safe Guard is manufactured in accordance to international standards and is registered under the National Medicines Regulatory Authority. It comprises of the ideal ingredients which should be included in a hand sanitizer. It not only kills off harmful germs, but it also preserves the skin from damage. Aloe Vera and Vitamin E which is included in Safeguard protects the users hands and keeps them moisturized whilst performing its task of killing off germs and bacteria.

Safe Guard has local plants to produce the product. Every product which is offered to the market comes with the ISO 2015 standard and is manufactured as per the WHO guidelines. Safe Guard is currently available in all the leading retail stores and supermarkets.

Q. WHY SHOULD BUSINESSES INVEST ON HAND SANITIZERS?

Keeping employees safe is crucial. It is uncertain on the surfaces which employees come into contact with. An outbreak could lead to a shutdown, if in turn leads the organization to compromise its profitability. To avoid that predicament, it is prudent to be proactive and provide the employees with hand sanitizers whenever requested.
