Located inside Zeylan Luxury Villa, Brew Lounge is the restaurant for its residents, and it is open to the public as well. It was revamped and opened only in February with a whole new menu, keeping up with ever changing trends of Colombo. It is a cosy space with beautiful landscaping; you would never picture how it is before you enter. This place can accommodate up to 50 guests and has a private dining area as well, where you can have a small gathering and the whole space can be booked for special functions as well.

Drinks Brew Over Ice

Brew Over Ice (Rs. 950) is one of their signature drinks that comes for two people.

It is definitely a sight to see as it gets made in front of you. They bring brewing tea, the flavour and iced water with lemon and mint separately along with an hourglass as well. The hourglass is set to 4 minutes and when the sand runs out, the seeping tea will be added to the jug with ice and lemons, followed by the flavour and mixed. We ordered peach iced tea and it was amazing. The level of tea to the flavour and sweetness, everything was perfectly balanced.

The Chocolate Frappe (Rs. 650), is your standard chocolate frappe with brewed coffee, chocolate milkshake topped with ice cream. The coffee wasn’t too overpowering, and it let the chocolate shine through. They don’t hold back on the ingredients, so I would suggest you have this if you’re planning to have a light meal.

Food All Time Favourite Hot Butter Cuttlefish

All Time Favourite Hot Butter Cuttlefish (Rs. 1100), is something we all know and love and they have done great justice to it as well. It was a bit crispier than I would have liked but still couldn’t hold myself back from going back for more, again and again! This is a massive portion of HBC as well, so it is definitely worth the price!

Tom Yum Goong

Brew Lounge also has a new Thai menu they introduced recently and we ordered a few dishes from that menu as well. This is a traditional Thai soup and it was made exactly how it should be. It contained prawns, kaffir lime leaves, galangal which tastes a lot similar to ginger, lemongrass and coriander dowsed in a spicy broth. If you are looking for something that is quite spicy and is also a palate cleanser, then this is what you should get!

Main Courses Pad Thai Noodle with Prawns

Again going into the Thai menu, we ordered Pad Thai Noodle with Prawns (Rs. 1200). They make it the most authentic way with rice noodles filled with bell pepper, tomatoes and scrambled eggs and peanuts, prawns, bean sprouts and chillie powder given separately, so you can mix it anyway you like. This was not that spicy as the authentic version. It captures the unique flavours, each component brings that would be otherwise be masked by the spiciness.

Bamboo Kottu

The Sri Lankan in me was elated by this concept and this meal! Bamboo Kottu (Rs. 1200), is a bamboo filled with kottu topped with an egg with curry on the side. The specialty is unlike other kottu, this gets steamed inside the bamboo for a few minutes so that the flavours of the bamboo can get absorbed to the kottu. This kottu was hands down the best kottu I have had and I think it speaks for itself. It was rich, filled with a lot of vegetables, showered with chicken and the flavour was so unique, unlike anything I have ever had!

Dessert Mango with Sticky Rice

Mango with Sticky Rice (Rs. 650), comes with sticky rice topped with treacle and shredded peanuts alongside of mango slices and a cup of extra coconut milk as well. Changing a bit on the original Thai dish, they have added treacle and peanuts to this, which I think elevates the dish to a whole other well. This is a must try for all the milk rice lovers out there and you will not be disappointed!

Homemade Coconut Ice Cream

The Homemade Coconut Ice Cream (Rs. 650), comes with coconut ice cream topped with honey infused shredded coconut and marshmallows on a chocolate shell sitting on a bed of cookie crumbs decorated with passion fruit mousse on the sides. The ice cream was the star of the dish and it was eclectic. The coconut and the chocolate along with the cookie crumbs blended so well and tasted amazing. This is a must try when you visit Brew Lounge!

What we recommend:

Bamboo Kottu!! You should definitely order this along with Mango with Sticky Rice and Homemade Coconut Ice Cream and All Time Favourite Hot Butter Cuttlefish.

Would we go again?

Yes definitely. They are extremely innovative with their dishes, so we cannot wait to see what they will create in the future!
