Sri Lanka has been able to control the spread of COVID-19 more successfully than any other powerful country in the world, army Commander General Shavendra Silva said.

He said that despite the current situation of about 500 patients being reported daily, the spread of COVID-19 in Sri Lanka is under control compared to other countries in the world.

“Around 500 Covid patients are being reported in the country daily these days. But considering the world situation, we have to say without fear that COVID-19 is in control and that the support of the people is vital for this, the Commander said at an event held in Matale to unveil a special ‘Hockey Monument’ on Saturday. General Silva said that people have to live with the coronavirus.

“We have to live with this. When we look at the world situation, the most powerful countries in the world are on their knees at this time. The highest number of deaths per day in the United States was reported on Friday. At such a time we were able to take control of COVID-19 in Sri Lanka and that we expect the support of the people for this,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Centre reported early Saturday that there are nearly 90 million global COVID-19 cases.

The United States has more cases than any place else with almost 22 million infections. India comes in second with about half the infections of the U.S. -- nearly 10.5 million cases. The U.S. reported more than 300,000 new COVID-19 cases Friday, a record-breaking number.
