Sri Lanka’s leading private sector bank HNB PLC continued its trailblazing legacy at Best Corporate Citizens Sustainability Awards (BCCSA) 2020, in recognition of its pioneering sustainability initiatives over the past year.

Hosted by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC), the awards are considered to be among the pinnacle of corporate achievement in Sri Lanka. In total, HNB won three accolades at this year’s awards, including being declared among the Top 10 Best Corporate Citizens in Sri Lanka.

“Given the especially volatile and uncertain environment we find ourselves in, the fostering of sustainable and ethical practices has become absolutely essential. Through our progressive policies and commitment to sustainability initiatives, HNB is intent on ensuring financial security and growth for every Sri Lankan. We are therefore honoured by the accolades presented to HNB today. Moving forward, we will continue to serve as a partner in sustainable progress for the entire nation,” HNB Executive Director/ Chief Operating Officer Dilshan Rodrigo stated.

The CCC’S ranking of the 10 Best Corporate Citizens in Sri Lanka is based on an evaluation of corporates that have enhanced the well-being of their communities in conjunction with achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS). Fostering a reputation for excellence, HNB has consistently ranked among the 10 Best Corporate Citizens in the past.

HNB was also declared a winner in the Economic Contribution – Consistent Commitment and Continuous Improvement category. Chosen from a select pool of corporate entities, which have been recognised at the Best Corporate Citizen Sustainability Awards for at least three years in the past, the award is a testament to the bank’s consistently improving performance each year.

Over the past two decades, HNB has promoted environmental, social and governance-compliant investment opportunities, both in the country and overseas, by heavily funding offshore renewable power projects. In particular, HNB was recently involved in Sri Lanka’s first-ever waste-to-energy project, establishing its leadership in the field of renewable energy production.

Additionally, the bank was awarded a Merit certificate for the Best Sustainability Project, in recognition of its invaluable contribution through the construction of a Cancer Counselling Centre at Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama. The centre will provide patients at Apeksha Hospital with emotional support during the course of their treatment.
