April Madness

“Be the woman who fixes another woman’s crown without telling the world that it was crooked,” is the advice given to young women

Is it something in the air that makes all sorts of things good and bad happen in the month of April? Probably because the sun aligns itself to be right on top of our heads. Additionally, the heat is unbearable making everybody bad tempered and many ill mannered.

It all started at Bella’s lunch where one of the guests was in shock after a telephone conversation with Ditzy. Naturally, all the others were concerned thinking Bella’s aging mother had passed away. Only to find out that Ditzy had to make her own bed that morning up in the hills where she was spending Easter weekend at the so-called prestigious Club for the gentry from Colombo since the Club’s entire staff had walked out. Ditzy, who had never made a bed in her life, was horrified. This panicked some of the ladies at the lunch thinking that their

Avurudhu weekend plans would be buckled. It seems that owing to some truce reached all is under control temporarily and the ladies and gentlemen of Colombo can mingle in the premises. It was women’s day last month. How wonderful it was to see women patting each other on their backs, awards being handed out by the dozen and all talking to each other on how they should encourage those around them to reach the heights in this macho world and empowering all women kind. I overheard a woman saying that after all the struggles and abuse and the put downs she had undergone because she was a woman, her ambition was that one day she would have a woman tea plucker appointed a Director on the Tea Board. It would only be then that she would be at peace with her fight for women’s rights.

This is only the first week of April. Who knows what is in store for us for the rest of the month. But then again, we made it to the New York Times and the BBC, which are achievements, bad or otherwise, thanks to the brawl.

It is all due to planetary changes said some. Whatever the cause we are all kept entertained with these shenanigans. Viva Sri Lanka, we just love it !
