Pathetic display by our Cricketers
The question that confounds us is the criteria on which Cricket selectors in Sri Lanka cricket is chosen. One wonders whether you have to be a Fast bowler to become a the Chief Selector. We had Kapila Wijegoonewardena, Graeme Labrooy followed by Ashantha de Mel and now in the hot seat is Promodya Wickremasinghe. Is this a coincidence or does the SLC think they qualify in some mysterious way to hold the post? The drastic changes of the team in recent times raised many an eyebrow. Out of the blues, so to speak, Kusal Perera was brought in to skipper a young side and for some reason best known to them that Dimuth Karunaratne was removed from the post. The question on everyone’s lips is,”kusal Perera ready to take over the reins as Captain?” His form has not been consistent over the past few months and did not show signs of responsibility in his batting playing rash shots when the country needed him. Kusal is an excellent batsman and one of the best among the present lot and capable of big scores with discipline, but was he ready for this leadership role? Countries in the sub continent such as India and Pakistan have a flurry of talent and every position appear to be replaceable with new talent. Unfortunately we do not have such a luxury and in the present juncture we are compelled to rely on the seniors, as no young talent can be identified from the youngsters. The biggest asset to good leadership is self discipline in all walks of life. The performance in England in the final T20 game was indeed one of our worst debacles.

The future does not auger very well for Sri Lanka and we are in a critical stage with the paucity of talent unmistakably evident and seniors being discarded indiscriminately. Serious decisions must be taken as the experiment by our present batch of selectors has failed. There was an interesting comment made by Thilan Samaraweera who said there is nothing wrong with the System but we were successful because we had extraordinary cricketers. This is an absolute truth but how do we churn out these extraordinary cricketers?
