Living in stranger times

-

For 72 years, the Sri Lankan citizenry has had two choices; either rejoice over their elected leaders or lament and protest till a better, ‘cleaner’ regime is elected. But even after 70 years, Sri Lankans continue to live like frogs in a well.a country that was once praised by former Singaporean PM Lee Kuan Yew today, is struggling for its own survival.

When the Easter Sunday attack took place, the incumbent leader announced that he will contest for the Presidential Election and ensure that national security will be restored. People had so much faith in him since his previous stint as Defence Secretary and his involvement in beautifying Colombo had already attracted a fan base. Soon after his election, COVID struck.

Quarantine is now being used as a mode of detention. A feeble mother who extended her support at a demonstration was bundled and taken by female cops; cops have mercilessly torn clothes of female protesters

Nobody wants to ask questions such as why there were no medical experts in the frontlines, who takes decisions on COVID related matters, are other officials in the task force aware of what a COVID variant is, why are restrictions been relaxed when more deadly variants are being reported, and so on.

So far 3467 people have succumbed to the virus. Is that how national security is being restored? Let’s wait for an answer.

Quarantine is now being used as a mode of detention. a feeble mother who extended her support at a demonstration was bundled and taken by female cops; cops have mercilessly torn clothes of female protesters.the demonstrations happened on the day another individual donning the ‘satake’ made his red carpet entry to Parliament. while maroon flags were hoisted in many parts of the country and people, mostly who couldn’t find a day’s income due to lockdown were serving kiribath and were celebrating, those who were engaged in a peaceful demonstration were obstructed.

Five family members have already made it to the Diyawanna while many, many more have benefitted as a result of being close associates of the sataka clan. what is a little disturbing is to think of the future of the country as success seems to knock on their doors, only. For the people, it is an option of the ‘survival of the fittest’. Many consider migrating once COVID complexities subside. Some have already started the process. One Family, One Country and Many Laws will soon witness a huge brain drain which will create an irreplaceable void in the country.

To stay or not to stay is the question...
