Promote cultural tourism, not sex-tourism

- FR. EMMANUEL FERNANDO OMI

Sri Lankan government which wants to develop tourism and earn foreign exchange must promote cultural tourism, emphasising the natural beauty of Sri Lanka, the beauty of our people, our beautiful religious and cultural values and virtues and avoid permitting individuals and / or organisations to promote sextourism and earn money thereby degrading human dignity, our spiritual, our religious and our cultural values.

Sri Lanka is a country where four major religions / faiths (Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Christianity) are practiced and people have a right to protect their sacred and human values.

Human sexuality should not be allowed to become a symbol of consumerism for some people and organisations. Human body is sacred and has inherent dignity which is inviolable.

It should not be allowed to become a saleable product and a symbol of consumerism. Sex-tourism will also destroy the spiritual, religious and cultural environment and cause hurt feelings in the people.

Individual and groups interested only in pursuits to increase their money-power should not be permitted by the government, to hurt the feelings of the people who treasure their spiritual, religious and cultural values and their natural environment by depicting pornographic images and / or by starting centres for sex-tourism.

Men need to be taught to choose masculinity of non-violent gentleness and caring over masculinity of dominance and power which will pave the way for de-humanisation of women. Our parents must cooperate to bring up their children with moral strength. They need to promote the above-mentioned good and noble values, virtues and sport activities thereby help maintain also the good name of Sri Lanka.
