ENJOYING BEING SINGLE OR NEEDY

-

People go through phases in life, where some are fortunate to find a partner for life. Then there are some who look for a lifetime partner for all the wrong reasons, such as not having to be alone in the evening of their lives, financial stability and owing to peer and social pressure. Such people are unhappy as they are bound to their partners for better or worse. The braver ones dump their partners after a while and lead happy lives finding themselves and by not getting tied down to another with baggage.

There are many who cannot enjoy their solitude and are needy. This does not mean that they are looking for charity or money but that they are lost and, in short, are not happy with themselves. As such, they are ready to entangle or embroil themselves with any garbage they come across by forming a social chord just to fill their lives and loneliness, generally looking for a relationship, a push for continuous conversation (texting, calling, emailing, social media posting), persistently asking for reaffirmations of love, seeking out compliments and wanting to spend every moment with somebody else.

Young people who are happy in their career and single are constantly asked whether they do not have a significant other in their lives, whether they have any plans to marry since when old they would need someone to look after them, which generally means to have some children. I find that more and more young couples are either living together or having long term relationships before thinking of long term commitments. There is nothing wrong with being single too. Why ruin one’s life simply to please parents or others? Enjoy and be open to your sexuality; people should like you for whoever you are.

Fear of missing out makes people want the world to know how much better they are than others and ‘please please pick me.’ Neediness is repulsive because many of us have evolved to recognise it as a bad signal. Enjoy your life whichever way you wish and not depend on others for happiness. Enjoying solitude is a blessing in disguise which very few can comprehend.
