- BY RIHAAB MOWLANA

In a groundbreaking collaboration between the Lionel Wendt Art Centre and KALA, a platform dedicated to showcasing South Asian art, a new era of artistic exploration begins with the opening of its inaugural exhibition. KALA promises an immersive experience into the realms of modern and contemporary art in Sri Lanka. I had the privilege of sitting down with Ranil Peiris, Chairman of the Lionel Wendt Memorial Fund, and Ranil De Silva, Trustee of the Lionel Wendt Memorial Fund, to delve deeper into the vision behind KALA and its significance within the cultural landscape.

Ranil Peiris shed light on the legacy of Lionel Wendt, emphasizing his unparalleled creativity and foresight. As a visionary ahead of his time, Wendt’s influence reverberates through the Lionel Wendt Arts Centre, which stands as a testament to his commitment to nurturing performing and visual arts. The Lionel Wendt Memorial Fund, established in the early 1950s, continues to honour Wendt’s memory by providing a platform for artists to showcase their work and engage with the community.

KALA, derived from the Sanskrit word meaning performing art or skilled craft, embodies the essence of South Asian artistic expression. Ranil De Silva elaborated on the genesis of KALA, highlighting its roots in the Trustees’ mission to propagate the arts and support diverse artistic endeavors. Inspired by institutions such as the Royal Academy in London, KALA aims to invigorate the cultural landscape of Sri Lanka by curating immersive exhibitions and fostering collaboration within the artistic community.

The inaugural exhibition, ‘Pivot Glide Echo’, curated by Miriam Begum, pays homage to Lionel Wendt’s multifaceted approach to art. Drawing on Wendt’s exploration of technique, the human form, and the environment, the exhibition showcases the works of esteemed artists such as George Keyt, Thenuwara, and Kingsley. Through curated tours, workshops, and lectures, KALA invites audiences to delve deeper into the rich tapestry of South Asian artistry.

Addressing concerns about accessibility, Ranil De Silva emphasized KALA’S commitment to engaging diverse audiences. Initiatives such as free admission for students and curated tours aim to broaden participation and foster a deeper appreciation for the arts. Looking ahead, the centre seeks to forge partnerships with schools and universities to further expand its reach and impact.

Looking towards the future, the Lionel Wendt Memorial Fund envisions a vibrant arts community centered around the Lionel Wendt Arts Centre. Plans for a performing arts festival, scholarships for aspiring artists, and the establishment of a dedicated archive underscore the Fund’s commitment to nurturing artistic talent and preserving

Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage. As KALA continues to evolve, it promises to be a beacon of creativity and inspiration for generations to come.

Ranil Peiris highlighted the Fund’s strategic approach to managing the Lionel Wendt Arts Centre, emphasizing the need for specialized expertise to ensure its continued success. By collaborating with professionals such as Saskia Fernando, the Fund aims to leverage diverse perspectives and resources to enhance the Centre’s offerings and reach. Ranil De Silva echoed Peiris’ sentiments, emphasizing the importance of partnerships and collaborations in realizing KALA’S vision.

As KALA embarks on its inaugural edition, both Peiris and De Silva expressed optimism about its future trajectory. By fostering a vibrant arts ecosystem and nurturing emerging talent, KALA aims to redefine the cultural landscape of Sri Lanka and showcase the rich diversity of South Asian art to the world.

The collaboration between the Lionel Wendt Art Centre and KALA represents a watershed moment for the arts in Sri Lanka. By honouring the legacy of Lionel Wendt and embracing the spirit of innovation and collaboration, KALA promises to inspire and engage audiences for years to come. As the inaugural exhibition unfolds, it invites visitors to embark on a journey of discovery and celebration, paying tribute to the enduring power of art to unite, inspire, and transform lives.

Plans for a performing arts festival, scholarships for aspiring artists, and the establishment of a dedicated archive underscore the Fund’s commitment to nurturing artistic talent...
