Arbitrary Action of the Central Bank

- HM NISSANKA WARAKAULLE

At a time when the whole country is trying to get out of an economically miserable state, many of us were flabbergasted to read the news item that the Central Bank has unilaterally increased the salaries of the employees and the pensioners of the Bank by 70%. This is indeed a high handed act on the part of the Central Bank at a time when the country is struggling to overcome its economic position, with many of the poor people unable to fend for themselves to have three square meals a day. The Central Bank is some sort of a fortress, or a replica of the Bastille and we are not sure whether it has to get the same treatment as the Bastille. This comparison is because only the people who were robbed by unscrupulous finance companies know how difficult it is to get through to anyone over the phone to find out details of what is happening to their refund.

One cannot go and meet any officer there, or get them on the phone. If someone has the possibility to get through to the Governor to apprise him of the woes, the officer dealing with the subject would blast such a person over the phone for having done this. I am stating this as I know of people who have received this treatment.

In light of all this, it is not correct for the Central Bank to have given this absolutely ridiculous increase to the staff at such a time.
