NETHMIKA BAGS SILVER AT ASIAN ATHLETIC MEET

Sri Lanka’s promising athlete Nethmika Herath produced a fine performanc­e to win a Silver Medal on the opening day of the 21st Asian Under-20 Athletic Championsh­ips in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Wednesday.

The captain of the Sri Lankan contingent returned her personal best of 13.01m and went on to claim the second place in the Women’s triple jump event.

Uzbekistan won the Gold Medal with a performanc­e of 13.33m while South Korea secured the Bronze Medal with a performanc­e of 12.67m.

The schoolgirl from Nannapuraw­a MV in Bibile, Monaragala is also set to compete in the Women’s long jump event.

Meanwhile, Ambagamuwa Central hurdler Ayomal Akalanka qualified for the finals of the Men’s 400m hurdles as he came almost close to matching his personal best.

Akalanka clocked 52.96s to finish second in his heat and qualify for the finals. Akalanka will compete in the final today.

In addition, the promising Tharushi Abisheka – who is the youngest member of the Sri Lanka Team - qualified for the final of the Women’s 800m.

The schoolgirl from Wickramaba­hu National School, Gampola finished third in her heat and will carry the third fastest time to the final, which will be held today.

In the Men’s 100m, Merone Wijesinghe of Ananda College, Colombo finished fourth in his heat.

Sri Lanka are fielded a team of 17 athletes, including four relay teams for this four-day regional meet, conducted by Asia Athletic.
